DANCE STYLE

10 Most popular Dancing styles in the World

Dancing is entertaining. Its passion for some people as well as profession for some. Whether you can or you can’t but you dance! everybody does. Its a way to express ourselves and have fun. Different cultures have different types of dancing styles. Thanks to globalization and digital media that no dance form is hidden to anybody. Here I’ve listed 10 most popular dance forms across the globe.

1.FREESTYLE DANCE_Dancing is entertaining.

2. SALSA _ No offense! Forget about the origin of this dancing style just enjoy it with your partner. Its beautiful, romantic and full of life. As some people says “this partner dance is a very sensual form that is known for the flirtatious and lively steps”. So learn it a bit and start enjoying with your partner.

3. HIP HOP _One of the most energetic and tough dancing style. It requires great flexibility and countless practice. Still this is the most popular dancing style for young people especially boys because it has no rules and protocol. Just dance the way you want. Freestyle dance style is a combined range of dance forms like Poping and Locking, Krumpin, Tecktonik, Break Dance etc.

4.BELLY DANCE_It is sexy and sensual! This dance is performed mostly in nightclubs. Beautiful girls dancing in bold costumes that revels their belly is the signature of this dancing form. Belly dance requires extremely flexible body and that is why today this dance form is being practiced to stay fit.
5.BREAK DANCE OR B-BOYING_Break Dance or B-boying or B-girling is a form of street dancing style popularize by Michale Jackson. The dance consists of four primary elements: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes/suicides. This style of dance is very acrobatic and has elements of gymnastics in it, this style of dance calls for strength, skill, balance and technique amongst other things.
6.BHANGRA DANCE _ No need to learn anything, just dance with the beats of drums. It a Punjabi dance form that is now spread through-out the world. Though the original Bhangra has many specific moves but for me lifting your hands up and jump(dance) like others are doing is called Bhangra. This form of dance is not just like dance; it is the way to express your happiness. This is the only dancing style I can dance and I’m sure you also can.
7.BALLROOM DANCE _Most popular social as well as one of the most entertaining dancing form. This form of partner dance is enjoyed both socially and competitively around the world. Because of its performance and entertainment aspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on stage, film, and television. These style was developed in England and are now regulated by the World Dance Council (WDC).

8.BALLET DANCE_Wiki says Ballet is a formalized kind of performance dance, but for me this is really a royal form of dance dominated by girls with beautiful gesture and amazing spins. It is a poised style of dance that incorporates the foundational techniques for many other dance forms. This genre of dance is very hard to master and requires much practice.
9.JAZZ DANCE _ Jazz dance finds its origins in the African American culture. From the olden days till date, there are many influences that have added a variety to this dance form. One can see many overlapping of steps in Jazz dance, which are similar to various other styles. The common steps in Jazz dance are the ball change, the pivot step, the toe rise, the pirouettes, Jazz walk etc. Jazz dance is basically an energetic form that is equally graceful like other dances. This type of dance can also incorporate various styles.
10.TAP DANCE_Wear black suite and shiny shoes then start dancing. Here the emphasis is on the movements of the feet and steps that create a tapping sound. The tapping sound is due to the presence of metal plates on the soles of the shoes. Creating music/rhythm with your feet while dancing is the soul of this dance form.

hiphop

AN INTRODUCTION TO HIP HOP
when people think of hip-hop they tend to think of rap music and its related activities. For most people hip-hop is a popular music genre, and this is how most people approach hip-hop. Regardless as to how the original founders of Hip Hop depict and interpret their culture, most professors and activists alike approach hip-hop in the way that mainstream corporations approach it—as a product to be bought and sold. Because of this, those who practice the artistic elements of Hip Hop as well as those who may teach some aspect of hip-hop limit themselves to a corporate point of view where hip-hop is approached as an object to be sold, and not as a subject to be learned.

Finger-Breaking

Finger Breaking is a form of breakdancing with your hands where you use your pointer and middle finger as legs and your thumb and pinky finger are the break dancers arms (the ring finger is ignored) and you can use items such as finger shoes or mini outfits to give your finger break dancer some style and attitude.

Finger Breaking can be tracked back to 2004 when Lilach Chen aka “bgirldeedee” started practicing her b-girl moves with her hands and decided to record and upload her new finger dancing videos to youtube in 2005 and has had over 35 million views since then.  She now is a very respected leader in the Finger Breakdance community and has worked with many major brands like Sony Ericsson and Red Bull where she was a judge of their first Red Bull BC One FingerBreakin’ competition held in Seoul, South Korea November 30, 2013.
Red Bull used Finger Breaking as part of finger breakdancing competition in over 10 regions around the world called Red Bull BC One FingerBreakin.  Red Bull sent out starter boxes that had a pair of finger breakdance shoes, a can of Red Bull, a mini cardboard boom box, and the box turned into a stage.  Red Bull went as far as making tutorial videos aka The Tricktionary which teaches moves such as the toprock, helicopter, applejacks, slides, windmills and even the worm!  The contestants would make their own cool and original finger breakdance video and record them using their phones or computers in order to be able to upload them to YouTube.  There was bracket style voting and the winners from each region were flown out to the 2013 Red Bull BC One Breakdancing Competition in Seoul, South Korea.  The winner, Differ Kim (who is no rookie to the breakdance world) was crowned at the competition and given a prize pack which included a gold Finger Breaker Trophy.

Finger Breakdancing allows anyone with hands the ability to learn and perform breakdancing moves and tricks without having the risk of injury that real breakdancing has.  Finger Breaking is fun for all ages and you will catch yourself doing it everywhere that music is playing.

here is a video of finger-breaking battle!!

Pop, Lock ‘n’ Load with B-Boy NEVERMIND

Over the last five years, b-boying’s made its foray into India. We've probably got YouTube to thank for this. Many of India's current crop of b-boys found out about the dance form through YouTube videos and Hollywood's dance movies. Now, there are several crews scattered over the country and even more individual b-boys, each with their own unique flava and strengths. Naidu Sagar aka B-Boy Never Mind has quickly become a prominent name on the b-boying circuit, and has represented Freak N Stylz Crew and India in various international tournaments in the South-East, including the eliminations for the prestigious R-16. He tells us what makes him tick.

Indian Classical Dances

India has thousands of year old tradition of fine arts and classical and folk music and dances. Some of the world-famous dance forms that originated and evolved in India are Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam and Odissi. All these dance forms use basically the same 'mudras' or signs of hand as a common language of expression and were originally performed in the temples to entertain various Gods and Goddesses. They were also effective in carrying forward the various mythological stories from generation to generation while entertaining the audiences. It eventually became a part of 'Natya Shashtra', as propounded by Sage Bharata to compile and forge some rules and regulations of entertaining arts.

With time, the classical dances evolved to include the expressions and themes from social life and experiences. Lord Shiva is said to be the 'Nataraja' meaning 'King of All Dances', who is said to perform the Cosmic Dance that delicately balances life and death and all that is happening in the Universe in harmonious cycles. Bharatnatyam, popular in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, is said to be revealed by Lord Brahma to Bharata. Kathak is the art to tell a story and is a form of North Indian classical dance. Later, it became courtly entertainment.

Kathakali from Kerala makes use of colorful masks and costumes and belongs to Kerala. Kuchipudi is the dance drama of Andhra Pradesh that combines Natya, Nritta and Nritya. Manipuri, as the name suggests, is from Manipur, the Northeastern state of India, and is a combination of many dances prevalent in the region. Mohiniattam from Kerala is a solo female dance and is known for its rhythmic and unbroken flow of the body movements. Odissi from Orissa is a dance of love, joy and intense passion.

Bharatnatyam
Bharatnatyam is one of the most popular classical Indian dances. Bharatnatyam is more popular in South Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Bharatnatyam dance is almost 2,000 years old. It is believed that Bharatnatyam was revealed by Lord Brahma to Bharata, a famous sage who then codified this sacred dance in a Sanskrit text called the Natya Shastra. The Natya Shastra is one of the fundamental treatises on Indian drama and aesthetics.

Kathak
Kathak is one of the most important classical dances of India. Kathak is said to be derived from the word katha, meaning "the art of storytelling." The Kathak dance form originated in north India and was very similar to the Bharatnatyam dance form. In ancient India, there were Kathakars or bards who used to recite religious and mythological tales to the accompaniment music, mime and dance.

Kathakali
Kathakali is the classical dance form of Kerala. The word Kathakali literally means "Story-Play". Kathakali is known for its heavy, elaborate makeup and costumes. In fact, the colorful and fascinating costumes of Kathakali have become the most recognized icon of Kerala. Kathakali is considered as one of the most magnificent theatres of imagination and creativity. Kathakali dance presents themes derived from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and other Hindu epics, mythologies and legends.

Kuchipudi
Kuchipudi is one of the classical dance forms of the South India. Kuchipudi derives its name from the Kuchipudi village of Andhra Pradesh. In the seventeenth century the Kuchipudi village was presented to the Brahmins, who were experts in staging dance and drama. Kuchipudi exhibits scenes from the Hindu Epics, legends and mythological tales through a combination of music, dance and acting. Like other classical dances, Kuchipudi also comprises pure dance, mime and histrionics but it is the use of speech that distinguishes Kuchipudi's presentation as dance drama.

Manipuri
Manipuri is one of the six major classical dances of India. Manipuri dance is indigenous to Manipur, the North eastern state of India. The Manipuri dance style is inextricably woven into the life pattern of Manipuri people. The most striking part of Manipur dance is its colorful decoration, lightness of dancing foot, delicacy of abhinaya (drama), lilting music and poetic charm. The Manipuri dance form is mostly ritualistic and draws heavily from the rich culture of the state of Manipur.

Mohiniattam
Mohiniattam is a classical dance form of Kerala. Mohiniattam is derived from the words "Mohini" (meaning beautiful women) and "attam"(meaning dance). Thaus, Mohiniattam dance form is a beautiful feminine style with surging flow of body movements. Mohiniattam dance in Kerala developed in the tradition of Devadasi system, which later grew and developed a classical status.

Odissi
Odissi is one of the famous classical Indian dances from Orissa state. The history of Odissi dance is almost two thousand years old. Odissi is a highly inspired, passionate, ecstatic and sensuous form of dance. Like most of the South Indian classical dances of India Odissi too had its origin in the Devadasi tradition. The state of Orissa has a great cultural history.

Krumping

Krumping is a street dance popularized in the United States that is characterized by free, expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic movement involving the arms, head, legs, chest, and feet. The youths who started krumping saw the dance as a way for them to escape gang life and "to release anger, aggression and frustration positively, in a non-violent way."

Style There are four primary moves in krump: jabs, arm swings, chest pops, and stomps.Krumping is rarely choreographed; it is almost entirely freestyle (improvisational) and is danced most frequently in battles or sessions rather than on a stage. Krumping is different stylistically from other hip-hop dance styles such as b-boying and turfing. Krumping is very aggressive and is danced upright to upbeat and fast-paced music, whereas b-boying is more acrobatic and is danced on the floor to break beats. The Oakland dance style turfing is a fusion of popping and mimeing that incorporates storytelling and illusion. Krumping is less precise than turfing and more freestyle.Thematically, all these dance styles share common ground including their street origins, their freestyle nature, and the use of battling. These commonalities bring them together under the umbrella of hip-hop dance.

Vocabulary
Battle: when competitors face-off in a direct dance competition where the use of arm swings and chest movements known as flares and bucks are common.

Biter: someone who attends sessions or watches battles in order to feed on others' styles and originality so that they can mimic those moves later at another battle and pass them off as coming from their own inventiveness i.e. plagiarism.

Session: when a group of krumpers form a circle, or cipher in hip-hop context, and one-by-one go into the middle and freestyle.

Buck: an adjective used to describe someone who excels in krumping.

Call-Out: when a krumper initiates/requests a battle with another dancer by calling them out.

Labbing: when krumpers get together to create new moves and/or adapt their style.

Kill-Off: when a krumper performs a set of movements that excites the crowd to the point where the battle is over and the crowd surrounds the krumper; the opponent is "killed off."

Jabs: short, sharp, staccato movements when the arms extend from the chest outwards.

Dance-means

.What does Dance mean to me?

How can one clearly explain what dance is? To many, it may simply be movements to the sounds of music but for me, it extends to more than just that. It plays the role of a means of escape, an art form that the human body engages in that allows for the body to speak meaning in a seemingly meaningless world and encapsulates the embodiment for all things meek. Dance does not select who may participate or not, it asks only that the body surrender to the impulses it feels when movement is proposed. That my dear friends… is what dancing means to me.
Honestly, if i didn’t have dance in my life, i would be living a very miserable life. I’m so greatful that it is one of the talents that God has given me. It helps me distress a lot, when life gets too much and i don’t know how to cope, i clear out my room, play music and just start dancing. Its the best way to help me get back on track and feel good again.. What i love about dancing is that it doesn’t matter who you are, technique or no technique, it doesn’t even care about size. ANYONE can do it, it’s all about the passion and heart for it, and if you are determined, you can get to the point where your body can achieve anything through movement. Dancing expresses the body in a way that only the soul can understand. It is a gift from God.
